DOCUMENTING DAYTON AND OUR COMMON STRUGGLES

The Facing Project, a cross-disciplinary community-led project, touches on the stories and lives of Dayton residents. These stories were shared with the intention of starting dialogue about the current challenges and injustices of local communities, as well as creating a space for solutions to be rallied around.

My work:

The poster here is one that I designed and created to represent the story of Steve Ross (the following file submitted). Although only asked to create a typographic poster of his story, I decided that such a personal and in-depth narrative could not be appropriately told solely through a flat surface. Instead, I created a complementary book that led viewers through his story and that included interactive elements that could be taken out, touched, and experienced. Through in-depth research and time spent with the storyteller, I gained a thorough understanding of his neighborhood’s past, as well as its current struggles.

PROJECT COMPONENTS:

Interviewed Mr. Ross, the storyteller whose story my poster was featuring.

Designed a poster that spoke to this story and that featured an interactive book.

Assembled a piece with images, stories, and designs from Mr. Ross.
